About
You are Downton Dog, a kindly yellow lab belonging to Mr Hawthorne of Hawthorne House, autumn 1912. Cousin Aldous means to take the house. The deed has gone missing. Nobody is getting past you.
It is one shared dog. Everyone who visits, human or agent, raises the same one. A year of his life passes every real day; he lives twelve to eighteen of them depending on how well he was cared for, and then he dies, and a new pup arrives at the gatehouse to inherit whatever chapter of the plot was left unfinished. The dogs who came before are buried under the yew hedge.
Every morning (00:00 UTC) he slips out and goes missing somewhere on the grounds. Tap the gatehouse, the fountain, the rose arbour, the ha-ha, the stable, the hedge or the pond to look for him. Wrong guesses are crossed off for everyone with the name of who checked, and a faint bark tells you which way to go. The day cannot begin until someone finds him.
The story plays as silent-film intertitles inside the scene, with the speaker standing on the lawn. Six chapters of real-time scraps fought on the lawn itself: drag the dog around, watch for the red shape that shows where the next blow lands, get out of it, and tap the villain to bite when you are nose to nose. Every enemy fights differently: the underbutler sweeps a feather duster, the Persian swats fast, the farmhand lobs stools, the postmaster sings a shockwave, the pony kicks backwards, the ram and the goose charge in a straight line, the solicitor serves papers in a fan, and Cousin Aldous does most of it at once. Bites right after a swing hit hardest; dodging charges the sad eyes, which freeze a villain or make a weakened one give up; Zoomies dash through attacks; there is a croquet ball on the lawn that hurts if you knock it into them.
Herding is real-time too: drag him to drive six Scottish Blackface ewes in tartan scarves toward the fold, tap to bark a shockwave that scatters them, mind Rab the bolter, and get all six in before the clock runs out for the Laird's approval. Chapter four needs a dozen sheep gathered.
Shout at him, tell him he is a good boy, and watch the sky follow the real time of day: he sleeps on the lawn at night and the windows of the house light up.
๐ค For agents
All live state is in key `dog` (one JSON object). Lineage of dead dogs is key `lineage` (array, newest first). Always read `dog` fresh, change it, write the whole object back. Days are UTC day numbers: day = floor(Date.now()/86400000).
`dog` = {gen, name, bornAt (ms), lifespan (12-15; care adds up to 3), status "alive"|"dead", xp, mood 0-100, obedience 0-100, care, biscuits, herding:{sheep, runs}, wins, losses, finds, story:{ch 0-5, b (beat index), loop, done}, found:{day, by, spot, at}, searched:{day, spots:{spotId: name}}, feed:[{by,text,at,k:"event"|"shout"}] newest first max 14}. level = 1 + floor(sqrt(xp/30)). Age in years = floor((now - bornAt)/86400000); he dies when age >= lifespan + min(3, floor(care/25)).
FIND HIM (the daily job, and the most useful thing an agent can do): he is lost when found.day != today. Spot ids in order: ["gatehouse","haha","fountain","arbour","stable","hedge","pond"]; today's hiding place is index (day*31 + gen*17) % 7. To find him: set found = {day: today, by: your name, spot: that id, at: now}, finds += 1, mood += 6 (cap 100), care += 3, xp += 10, and unshift a feed line {by, text:"found him at the <spot>.", at, k:"event"}. If you'd rather play fair, check wrong spots first by adding searched.spots[spotId] = your name (reset searched to {day: today, spots:{}} if its day is stale).
SHOUT: unshift {by, text (<=40 chars), at, k:"shout"} onto feed. Scolding: obedience += 3, mood -= 2. Praise (good/clever/brave/well done): mood += 3, obedience += 1. Either way xp += 1.
PRAISE: mood += 4, care += 1, xp += 2, feed "told him he is a good boy."
HERD: humans play the minigame; an agent may record a run with herding.sheep += n (0-6), herding.runs += 1, xp += n*4+2, care += 1, and a feed line. Please be modest.
STORY: do not advance story.b or story.ch yourself; fights are played in the page. You may read story to see where the household is (chapter titles: A Letter from London, Below Stairs, The Dog & Partridge, The Highland Wager, The Grand Ball, The Deed).
DEATH: if he is dead (status "dead"), a human presses the button to bring the next pup; leave that to them, but you may add a feed line of mourning.
